I haven’t been writing much lately… Motherhood of busy little toddlers tends to keep me distracted ha ha. Nevertheless, I saw a daily journaling prompts post on social media and thought, why not jump on the laptop and spend just ten minutes writing, to share a few simple thoughts. So, here goes…

Family traditions
Our family traditions are the customs (rituals, habits, practises and ways) and beliefs (faith and/or values) passed from one generation to another – an inheritance of sorts.
When I initially thought of family traditions, my mind went to things like our family piling into the car and going out on Christmas Eve to look at the lights adorning people’s homes. A time of lighthearted fun, togetherness, laughter and chatter. Special. Memorable. These kinds of traditions are an integral part of every family – they are things which set them apart, something which speaks to their values and builds relationships. Such practises matter. Which ones does your family embrace? Weekly family dinners? Bedtime stories and prayer? Matching Christmas PJs? Pancake birthday breakfasts? Games nights? Camping trips? Compiling a gratitude jar to read together on New Year’s Eve? Something else? (Feel free to share in the comments – others might like to try them out too!)
On a deeper level though, there are more significant habits which we must embrace as a family if we are to do as Christ commanded us to, in teaching each generation about Him. I feel this is a mandate, a calling, an obligation yet also a privilege. What a joy it is to be able to share Jesus with those we love so dearly. What an incredible gift it is to share such treasures – the very heart of our Saviour and His immeasurable love for us!
If you’d like to dig into scripture a little more yourself and see what it has to say about traditions, check out these passages:
- Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Proverbs 22:6 nd Ephesians 6:4 (instructing about faith in every moment, every day)
- Exodus 12 (remembrance of God’s deliverance)
- Joshua 24:15, Psalm 78:4 and 2 Timothy 1:5 (choosing to bring your household to know and serve Jesus, and walk according to His power that works in us)
Remember, ‘The traditions we create today will be the memories our children cherish in the future’.
