Today’s writing prompt is an inspiring movie. The one that instantly came to my mind, when I considered this topic, was, ‘War room’. If you’ve not seen it, do! You’ll definitely be encouraged.
Essentially, the plot follows a family on their journey through some struggles and they discover the power of prayer. Seems so simplistic, yet prayer is an often undervalued and overlooked part of our lives and what can help us to live victoriously. How often have you heard someone say, “The only thing we can do is pray”, as if they’ve really reached the end of their ‘useful’ ideas to deal with challenges and this is all they’ve got left… as if prayer is just a vain hope that really can’t be relied upon… So sad that we can view prayer this way – especially when we consider that even Jesus, God’s very Son, reached out to His Father in times of need and prayed! I mean, if Jesus needed to pray, then I guess we should too! lol
A few thoughts…
- Prayer is relationship building – just as regular conversations with a spouse lead to increased closeness, so we grow closer to God when we spend time in prayer.
- Prayer is an effective weapon (hence the movie’s title, ‘War room’)
- Writing down our prayers – whether it be on ‘post it’ notes, in a journal or digitally – gives us the ability to reflect on the faithfulness of God as we see Him move in situations.
- Scripture-based prayers align our hearts with the will of the Father. This is critical, as prayer isn’t about our desires but rather about us coming to be more like Christ. Often circumstances don’t go the way that we expect, however God can indeed work all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
- Dwelling upon verses in the Bible leads us to understand the Lord’s heart more and more. The more you gaze on the beauty of something (or someone – Jesus), the less other distractions take your eye. Being purposeful in meditating on the Word is something that will never leave you empty, for ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will also be’ (Matthew 6:21) and ‘All scripture is God-breathed (inspired) and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness’ (2 Timothy 3:16).
Now, over to you… which movies inspire you? (Faith-based or otherwise) What should I add to my ‘must watch list’ and why?
